Travel Review: Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Puerto Rico

Visiting Castillo San Felipe del Morro was definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Puerto Rico. The second you arrive, you can feel the history in the air. It’s a massive fortress that sits right on the edge of Old San Juan, overlooking the ocean — the views alone are worth the visit.

Walking through the thick stone walls, narrow tunnels, and old barracks, I could imagine what life was like for the soldiers stationed their hundreds of years ago. There’s so much to explore, from the old cannons and lookouts to the wide-open fields in front of the fort where you’ll probably see people flying kites or just relaxing in the breeze.

It’s a great mix of history, architecture, and scenic beauty. I’d recommend wearing comfortable shoes because there’s a good amount of walking and some steep areas, but it’s totally worth it. Whether you’re into history or just want to take in some incredible views of the ocean and city, El Morro is a must-see in Puerto Rico.

While in Old San Juan, I also checked out the famous Governor’s Street (Calle Fortaleza), which is now beautifully decorated with hanging lights instead of the umbrellas. It creates a magical vibe, especially in the evening. Nearby, the Governor’s Mansion (La Fortaleza) stands as a stunning piece of history and architecture.

If you’re in Puerto Rico, El Morro and the surrounding area are a must-see!
